Trail Report

Labor Day weekend is on the horizon, and with that the transition into Fall begins. Galena Lodge’s closing day is Sunday, September 14th. Galena is a great jumping off point for many trail adventures and a wonderful place to refuel before or after. Be sure to get to the lodge these next few weeks before they close for the summer season. We do have plenty of trail time left before the snow flies, but this time of year we start to see shorter days, meaning timing your trail outings will be important to avoid getting caught out in the dark unprepared in the evenings.

A safely reminder for our bikers and moto riders, trails are very dry, especially in our south valley. This is the time to slow down and use caution. Last week a user has reported the need for extra caution on sections of the Croy trail system, notable on the downhill portion of Bull Dog towards Bullion Rd. on the switch backs. When in doubt slow down and keep the rubber side down!

The South Idaho Interagency Dispatch Center announced Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect as of today. Blaine County Sheriff reports restrictions apply to all lands north of U.S. Route 20 from Hill City east to the Craters of the Moon National Monument Park Visitor Center to the northernmost Sawtooth National Forest boundary, as described within the respective agencies' Stage 1 Fire Restriction orders. South of U.S. Route 20, restrictions will only apply to National Forest System lands within the boundaries of the Minidoka Ranger District of the Sawtooth National Forest. For more information see the map and links below.

Bald Mountain has trail closures due to trail building and logging work. Closed trails include River Run Trail, Pale Rider, Traverse Trail access to River Run, French Connection access to River Run, and Mindbender below Roundhouse. Sun Valley Company reports that conditions may change and please obey all posted signs. Check the Sun Valley app or Sun Valley Company's website for more lift and trail information.

BLM recently performed trail maintenance on Slaughterhouse’s Belle South and Vue 1.0 trails. This included cutting back plants encroaching on the trail. This is an occasional piece of preventative maintenance that helps keep our trails in good shape and usable for years to come.

Any trail labeled as partially open (yellow), is available for use if and when conditions allow. Though these trails may not have been cleared of deadfall yet, so plan on possibly needing to navigate over down trees.
July 16th the Forest Service reported sheep moving throughout the valley and on grazing allotments. Click "more details" below for a more detailed sheep report.

Wildlife is present. For information on recommended best practices when wildlife or sheep are encountered, visit this site's Trail Alerts Section.

As you head out for your trail adventures, feel free to report anything you see that you think should be shared. Email me, the BCRD Trails Coordinator, Ashley Knox at [email protected].

Stay safe and enjoy our trails!
